Additional Tips for the Unemployed

First, please see the advice above by clicking on” Lost your Job? Now What?” Here are some other quick survival tips.

Cut your expenses

  • Try to cut your phone bill by reducing the level of service.
  • Cut your  cable TV/ satellite bill back to basic service.
  • Eating in restaurants is expensive.  Go to a grocery store and pick out items from the in- store sales circular.  Make sure to pick up some coffee you can make at home.
  • If your car payments are are high, try to unload the car for something reliable you can afford.
  • Consider taking in roommate or becoming one.  Start with people you know like family, friends or someone you worked with.
  • Increase the deductible on your car insurance and home owners/ renters policy and drive safely.
  • If you have student or other loans, ask if payments can be suspended without cost for a given period while you find work. (try 3 months) When you get back to work stay frugal, like when you did not have a job, until you pay those loans off.  Pay off the loan with the highest interest rate first.

Don’t forget to check out the free, no registration required links to state and federal jobs on this page. You will get through this tough time and be a stronger person for having gone through this situation!
